Just finished my first 100-miler! Western States 2025 Race Report

After 3 years of training and two DNFs at shorter distances, I finally crossed the finish line at Western States. The canyons in the daytime heat were brutal — I went through 4 liters of water just between Foresthill and the river. But when I hit the track in Auburn and heard my family cheering, all the pain just disappeared. 28:45 finish. I am absolutely doing this again. Ask me anything.

How I structure a 20-week 100-mile training block for intermediate runners

After coaching 200+ ultrarunners to 100-mile finishes, I've refined what works. The biggest mistake I see: too much mileage too soon. Here's the framework I use: Weeks 1-4 base building at 50-60 miles, Weeks 5-10 progressive long runs to 35 miles, Weeks 11-16 back-to-back long runs on weekends, Weeks 17-19 peak with race simulation, Week 20 taper. The key is consistency, not heroism.

Sub-24 at Leadville — my pacing strategy

After two 26+ hour finishes at Leadville, I finally cracked sub-24 this year with a 23:41. The difference? I slowed down the first 50 miles drastically. I went through Winfield (mile 50 turnaround) feeling like I was out for a jog. Most people blow up going out too fast in the altitude. Happy to answer questions about my split strategy.

500 ultramarathon finishes — what I've learned

This past weekend I finished my 500th ultramarathon. I started in 1994 with a 50K in the mud and haven't stopped. The sport has changed enormously — GPS watches, carbon poles, sophisticated gels. But the fundamentals haven't changed: move forward, take care of yourself, and be kind to the volunteers. It's still just running.

What I eat during 100-mile races — a detailed breakdown

Calories are king in ultras. Here's exactly what worked for me across 6 100-mile finishes: Aim for 250-300 cal/hr. Real food works better than gels after mile 40. My go-to: quesadillas, ramen, boiled potatoes with salt, ginger chews for nausea, and Red Bull starting at mile 60. I detailed my full nutrition plan with timings below.

Complete beginner — should I attempt a 50K next spring?

I've been running for 2 years, currently doing 25-30 miles/week, longest run is 18 miles. My friend wants me to sign up for a local 50K in May (about 20 weeks away). Is this feasible? I'm not trying to be competitive, just want to finish. Any advice from those who've done it?

Just registered for my first 50K! Any advice?

I did it — registered for my first ultra! It's a local trail 50K in 4 months. I'm a marathon runner (3:45 PR) making the jump to trails. What do I need to know about the differences? Training, gear, mindset?
