What to consider: what’s worked for others

Weather Kit

Carry the mandatory kit — no compromises

UTMB enforces a full mandatory gear list and checks it. Alpine weather can turn from t-shirt to snow in hours. A properly rated waterproof jacket isn't optional; skimping is a disqualification risk and a safety risk.

Footwear

Lugged shoes for technical alpine terrain

Long descents on rock and roots punish flat-soled shoes. Most finishers favor aggressively lugged trail shoes, and many carry a second pair for the second night. Consider poles for the big climbs.

Pacing & Poles

Poles are near-universal here

On 10,000 m of climbing, folding trekking poles are used by most of the field for the major cols. Practice pole technique beforehand and confirm pole rules in the current runner manual.

This curated section summarizes publicly available, legitimately sourced content, race-official requirements, finisher interviews, published gear lists, and race-report blogs. It is framed as “what to consider,” not as a statistic.
